7 meter python secured in Sinjai, can it really be that big?

A python measuring 7 meters was secured by firefighters (damkar) when they were about to cross to the Sinjai Police Headquarters, South Sulawesi (Sulsel). Can pythons really be that big?

Pythons are one of the largest snakes in the world that live in tropical and subtropical regions. Even though it doesn’t have venom, it kills its prey by coiling its body and stopping breathing or blood flow.

Pythons can prey on large animals such as pigs, monkeys, deer, and even humans. This is because its body can be large.

In Indonesia, there are 13 known types of pythons, including:

  • The reticulated python (Malayopython reticulatus), which is the longest snake in the world. Its length can reach more than 10 meters and its weight can reach 113 kg. Reticulated pythons live in rainforests, swamps and rivers. The reticulated python once preyed on a woman in Sulawesi in 2017.
  • Reticulated python (Python curtus), which has a brown and black skin pattern that resembles batik. Its length can reach 2.5 meters and its weight can reach 15 kg. Reticulated pythons live in rainforests, swamps and plantations. Reticulated pythons also preyed on a farmer in Sulawesi in 2018.
  • Bodo python (Python bivittatus), which has two dark stripes on the sides of its head. Its length can reach 6 meters and its weight can reach 40 kg. Bodo pythons live in rainforests, swamps and grasslands. Bodo pythons are an invasive species in the United States.
  • Timor python (Python timoriensis), which has a brown and cream skin pattern with black spots. Its length can reach 2 meters and its weight can reach 5 kg. Timor pythons live in dry forests, bushes and rocky cliffs.
  • Green python (Morelia viridis), which has a bright green color with blue or yellow spots. Its length can reach 2 meters and its weight can reach 1.5 kg. Green pythons live in rainforests and tall trees.
  • Golden python (Morelia amethistina), which has a golden purple color with black or brown spots. Its length can reach 8 meters and its weight can reach 90 kg. Golden pythons live in rainforests, swamps and rivers.
  • Cretaceous python (Morelia oenpelliensis), which has a gray-brown color with black or brown spots. Its length can reach 4 meters and its weight can reach 10 kg. Cretaceous pythons live in dry forests, bushes and rock cliffs.
  • Carpet python (Morelia spilota), which has a brown, black, yellow, or red bark pattern with dark spots or stripes. Its length can reach 4 meters and its weight can reach 15 kg. Carpet pythons live in rainforests, grasslands and plantations.
  • Tree python (Morelia tracyae), which has a yellowish brown color with black or brown spots. Its length can reach 2 meters and its weight can reach 1 kg. Tree pythons live in rainforests and tall trees.
  • Land python (Liasis fuscus), which has a grayish brown color with dark spots. Its length can reach 3 meters and its weight can reach 8 kg. Ground pythons live in dry forests, scrub and grasslands.
  • Water python (Liasis mackloti), which has a blackish brown color with white or yellow spots. Its length can reach 2.5 meters and its weight can reach 6 kg. Water pythons live in rainforests, swamps and rivers.
  • Savannah python (Liasis olivaceus), which has a greenish brown color with dark spots. Its length can reach 4 meters and its weight can reach 20 kg. Savannah pythons live in dry forests, shrublands, and grasslands.
  • Papuan python (Apodora papuana), which has a yellowish brown color with black or brown spots. Its length can reach 5 meters and its weight can reach 30 kg. Papuan pythons live in rainforests, swamps and rivers.
