70 million cubic meters of water flowing into the Mediterranean will be the lifeblood of the Konya Plain.

The 70 million cubic meters of water that will be saved from flowing into the Mediterranean with the projects will be the lifeline for the Konya Closed Basin, which consumes approximately 4.5 billion cubic meters of water annually.

DSI Konya 4th Regional Director Mehmet Ekinci emphasized to the AA correspondent that approximately 70 million cubic meters of water discharged into the Mediterranean through sinkholes in the Suğla region and the Gembos Plain.

Ekinci stated that they have started the project work on bringing this water to the Konya Closed Basin, “40 million cubic meters of Suğla and 25-30 million cubic meters of Gembos. These are not exact measurements, but the passage of approximately 70 million cubic meters of water to the underground via sinkholes, and from there to the Mediterranean”. “These figures are annual. We are planning to bring them to the Konya Closed Basin with the project we will do and develop. We have now started project work on these. This water flowing through the sinkholes is the lifeblood of the Konya Plain. Even a drop of water is very precious in the Konya Plain. 70 million cubic meters of water means irrigation water on an area of 140 thousand decares. he said.

Expressing that the Konya Closed Basin received 50 percent more precipitation than last year, Ekinci added that it received 10 percent more precipitation than the average for many years.
