A new plane model transforms Iberia

Iberia will be the launch customer of the new Airbus plane, the A321XLRa single aisle model but with capacity for travel up to 4,700 nautical miles15% more than its predecessor, the A321LR, which the Spanish airline hopes to be able to operate after the summer.

This was announced this Thursday by the president and CEO of the company, Marco Sansavini, who participated in the V International Expansion Forum, where he explained that they have not yet defined what the premiere route will be, but that the debate is between Washington and Boston, both in the United States.

Sansavini has stressed that this plane opens “very important opportunities“for Iberia because it allows us to offer a level of service comparable to that of a wide-body aircraft but with a plane”much more efficient and smaller“, with a 30% reduction in consumption per seat.

For the manager, this plane “has a mix of relative size and transportation efficiency that makes it possible to reach some destinations that would not be reachable without this plane.

The European aircraft manufacturer expects this model, which is in the certification phase and for which Iberia has eight aircraft on order, to begin operating in the second half of 2024.

The A321XLR was launched in June 2019 at the Le Bourget Air Show, near Paris (France). According to Airbus, this aircraft will allow operators to open new long-range non-stop routes.

Iberia highlights that the A321XLR will offer the same “premium” service as other long-haul, twin-aisle aircraft with which it operates, such as the A330 and A350. Business seats will have a hallway and direct access to the aisle. The aircraft configuration includes 14 business seats and 168 economy seats.
