Chinese Premier (PM) Li Qiang arrived in Jakarta to attend a leaders’ meeting to discuss East Asia cooperation and the ASEAN Summit which will be held this week. Li looks forward to having in-depth discussions with Asian leaders on important issues in the region.
Li also simultaneously made an official visit to Indonesia at the invitation of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi). This will be Li’s first visit to Indonesia since serving as PM of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China.
“I would like to convey my sincere greetings and best wishes from the Chinese people to the Indonesian people,” said Li in a written statement upon his arrival in Jakarta, as stated in a press statement received detikcomTuesday (5/9/2023).
In his statement, Li reaffirmed China’s support for ASEAN and suggested that ASEAN should play a bigger role on the international stage.
“Since the beginning of this year, Indonesia has played an important steering role as Chair of ASEAN. With the theme ‘ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth’, Indonesia has endeavored to forge consensus among all parties, stay focused on practical cooperation, and drive new advances in building the ASEAN Community and East Asia cooperation,” he said.
“China unswervingly supports ASEAN’s centrality in regional cooperation, and unswervingly supports ASEAN in playing a bigger role in international affairs,” Li stressed in his statement.
“I look forward to having in-depth discussions with other leaders on important issues in regional cooperation during the meeting, in a bid to strengthen solidarity and cooperation, share development opportunities, jointly overcome challenges, and enable East Asia to continue to function as a the main engine for global development,” he said.
