US President Joe Biden said that a new era has begun in relations between the United States and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Biden delivered a speech at a special US-ASEAN summit held at the US State Department in Washington.
Pointing to the importance of the US-ASEAN relationship, Biden said, “Not only are we celebrating the 45th anniversary of our friendship, we are ushering in a new era in US-ASEAN relations.”
The President of the United States noted that the two-day sessions discussed issues such as controlling COVID-19 and combating climate change: “These talks have shown how important the Pacific region and ASEAN are for the United States.”
Biden stressed that the US continues its mission of “an open and free Indo-Pacific.”
In particular, he stated that the US is investing another $150 million in the region.
The US has nominated Johannes Abraham, a spokesman for the White House National Security Council, to be the US Permanent Representative to ASEAN.
