Dozens of Democratic Party members in the United States House of Representatives are urging President Joe Biden to consider stopping arms sales to Israel, if the country does not change its war behavior against Hamas.
Reported by the news agency AFPSaturday (4/5/2024), a letter signed by 88 Democratic members of Congress and sent to the White House, increases pressure on Biden to take a tougher stance towards Israel, his loyal ally.
The lawmakers voiced “serious concerns regarding the Israeli government’s actions in the war in Gaza as it relates to deliberately withholding humanitarian aid.”
Israel’s restrictions on US-backed humanitarian aid deliveries in Gaza “have contributed to an unprecedented humanitarian disaster,” the letter said, citing the US Agency for International Development (USAID).
The lawmakers urged Biden to explain to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that any obstacles to aid deliveries to Gaza “risk its eligibility for further offensive security assistance from the United States.”
However, the letter states that the US funding cut should not include missile defense systems such as Iron Dome.
“We continue to support providing life-saving defense funding to Israel,” the letter said.
