Presidents of Turkey and Azerbaijan Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Ilham Aliyev took part in the opening ceremony of the 58th airport in Turkey – Rize-Artvin on Saturday.
Addressing the residents and guests of the northeastern province of Rize, President Erdogan congratulated the population of the Black Sea region of the country on the opening of a new air harbor.
The head of state called the new airport an indicator of Turkey’s achievements over the past 20 years in the field of civil aviation and transport.
According to him, the air harbor built over 5 years will contribute not only to the development of the Eastern Black Sea region of the country, but will also facilitate communication with neighboring Georgia.
The President noted that during the years of the rule of the Justice and Development Party, the number of airports in Turkey has increased from 26 to 58.
“In recent years, not only new air harbors have been built, but some of the existing ones have also been overhauled,” the Turkish leader stated.
The head of state noted that 4.4 billion Turkish liras were spent on the construction of the new Rize-Artvin airport.
The President urged residents of the north-east of Turkey to actively use air travel.

Speaking at the solemn ceremony, President Ilham Aliyev noted that the people and leadership of fraternal Turkey actively supported the people of Azerbaijan during the 44-day war for the liberation of the country’s historical lands from the occupation of Armenia.
“The words of President Erdogan during the Karabakh war that Azerbaijan is not alone sent a serious message to many. The second Karabakh war is a common glorious history of Azerbaijan and Turkey,” the Azerbaijani leader stressed.
According to him, he feels in Turkey as in his native country.
“Azerbaijan and Turkey are not only friendly and fraternal countries, but also allies. Our countries are together in trouble and in joy. Long live Rize! Long live Turkey! Long live the brotherhood of Azerbaijan and Turkey!” Aliyev said.
Turkey’s 58th airport built on sea embankment
It should be noted that the first regular flight of the national air carrier of Turkey – Turkish Airlines on the route Istanbul-Rize-Artvin landed on Saturday in the territory of the new air harbor. Travel time was 1 hour 20 minutes.
The new airport with a total area of 3 million square meters. m is located in the Pazar district – 34 km from the city of Rize, 54 km from Hopa and 125 km from Artvin.
The runway of the air harbor is 45 m wide and 3 km long. is the second longest strip of the country, built on a sea embankment.
To date, there are only five airports in the world with a runway built on a sea embankment – two of them in Turkey.
Rize-Artvin Airport will serve about 3 million passengers a year.
The entrance to the air harbor is built in the shape of a tea leaf, and the control tower is made in the shape of a tea glass – a tribute to tea growing, as one of the main sources of income for the inhabitants of this part of the Black Sea strip of Turkey.
The covered area of the airport is 47 thousand square meters. m.
The airport car park is designed for 448 cars.
The Çaykur Museum is also open on the territory of the airport, where everyone will be told about the benefits of Turkish tea. There is also a mini-tea factory.
