EU High Representative for Foreign Relations and Security Policy Josep Borrell stated that “Russia’s war against Ukraine” affects global security and that they are preparing a new package of sanctions against Russia.
Making a statement on his social media account, Borrell said, “We are working on the 6th package of sanctions, which aims to remove more banks from SWIFT, list disinformation players and address oil imports. These measures will be submitted to the European Council for approval.” used the phrase.
According to the reports in the Western media, the EU Commission is preparing to propose, in the 6th sanctions package, that the Russian banks Moscow Credit Bank and Russian Agricultural Bank be removed from the SWIFT system, which provides international money transfers.
It is stated that Sberbank, one of the largest banks in Russia, may also be included in the sanctions package. The EU and the US had previously removed some Russian banks from SWIFT by accepting coordinated sanctions packages.
It is stated that the new sanctions package of the EU may also include reducing oil imports from Russia and banning it until the end of the year.
However, few EU countries oppose cutting off oil exports from Russia. Peter Szijjarto, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Hungary, which is one of them, stated that they meet 65% of the oil demand from Russia, “We clearly say that ensuring the energy security of the country requires concrete steps on our part. We are not voting for sanctions that will limit oil supplies.” he said.
