EU voices opinion on Ukraine’s membership in June

The European Union (EU) will issue an opinion on Ukraine’s accession to the bloc in June, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Monday.

Saying on Twitter that he had held a videoconference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, von der Leyen noted that the two leaders had discussed EU support for Kyiv, as well as EU membership offers to the country.

“The EU Commission will present its opinion in June,” he said, adding that he was looking forward to receiving answers to the Ukraine membership questionnaire.

On April 8, von der Leyen visited Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, in solidarity with the country and announced that the bloc would consider Ukraine’s decades-old membership application.

However, officials from several EU member states argued that the completion of the questionnaire for Ukraine in such a short time would be extraordinary, as it took them months to complete the document — thousands of pages — during their own accession process.

Any country wishing to join the EU is required to fill out a questionnaire, which is considered one of the first steps in the EU membership process which is finally submitted to the EU Commission.

The Commission shares its opinions and recommendations on the document with member states.
