Explosion in Somalia, 1 dead, 4 injured

A Somali soldier was killed and four others injured in a bomb blast in southern Somalia on Tuesday.

A remote-controlled explosive device was planted along a road frequented by the Somali military in Burane, a village on the outskirts of Jowhar, capital of the Central Shabelle region, a police officer told Anadolu Agency.

“The bomb exploded as soldiers passed by motorbikes and motorized rickshaws,” said the policeman, who asked not to be named due to security concerns in the conflict-torn region.

“One of them died on the spot and the other was hospitalized,” he said, adding that Somali troops had carried out a search operation in the area.

So far no one has claimed responsibility for the blast, which came just a week after al-Shabaab terrorists stormed a military base located nearby.

Somali authorities say more than two dozen soldiers part of the African Union Mission in Somalia peacekeeping force were killed in the attack, while al-Shabaab claims more than 170 people were killed.
