Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has won the presidential elections in the Philippines, local media reported on Monday, citing preliminary results.

Marcos, heir designate to the political dynasty of the late Ferdinand Marcos who ruled the Philippines for more than 30 years, won more than 29.6 million votes at last count, with his closest rival Leni Robredo trailing far behind with 14. 1 million votes, according to the Manila Times.

He expressed his gratitude to the supporters who have supported him over the past six months.

“Any business as big as this is not one person,” Marcos said in his first public address after the preliminary results.

And to add: “It is based on a very, very large number of people working in a multitude of different ways, and to all of them, thank you”.

A record 67 million Filipinos were registered to vote for the general elections. They also voted to elect their local deputies, senators and administrators, as well as the president and vice president.

The counting of the ballots began on Monday shortly after the polls closed.

When the vote is confirmed, the six-year term of outgoing President Rodrigo Duterte should end.
