Colombo: Indians can now stay in Sri Lanka for one month without a visa. Visa has been made free for 30 days from March 31, 2024 to seven countries including India. Citizens of China, Russia, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia and Thailand can also stay in Sri Lanka for one month without a visa.
The Sri Lankan government’s move is part of strengthening the tourism sector. With this, the Visa on Arrival system has been stopped for the time being. According to this system, Indian tourists had to pay 2080 rupees on arrival in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka’s tourism sector was devastated by the 2019 Easter terror attacks. Most of the tourists to Sri Lanka are from India. Russia is second. Britain is in third place. Malaysia is set to introduce a similar free visa from December 1. Malaysia is providing facilities for tourists from India and China to stay for one month without a visa. Thailand also took a similar step.
