Indonesia strongly condemns the killing of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in the West Bank region on Wednesday in violation of international norms and laws.
“Indonesia expresses its deepest condolences to the families of the victims, and at the same time also calls for a thorough, independent and transparent investigation into the deaths of the victims,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
Indonesia also called for an end to Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories and the implementation of a two-state solution.
Abu Akleh was born in Jerusalem in 1971 and for the past two and a half decades, he has been one of Al Jazeera’s elite journalists covering the situation throughout the occupied Palestinian territories.
Al Jazeera accused Israeli forces of deliberately killing veteran journalist Abu Akleh in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday.
The Israeli army said that initial assessments showed Abu Akleh was “killed by Palestinian gunmen.”
The Palestinian Authority confirmed that Abu Akleh was “shot dead by Israeli soldiers.”
