Iran Claims Antarctica as Its Own, Will Build Base at South Pole

Washington DC

Iran announced in a state television broadcast that its regime owns the Antarctic continent and will establish military operations at the South Pole. Tehran’s claim is seen as a direct challenge to the government of United States (US) President Joe Biden.

As reported New York Post, Friday (16/2/2024), the announcement was made by the Commander of the Iranian Navy, Rear Admiral Shahram Irania, at the end of September last year. However, US media only reported it this week, citing a translation by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) based in Washington DC.

“We have property rights at the South Pole. We have plans to raise our flag there and carry out military and scientific work,” Irani said in his announcement at the time.

The Iranian Navy’s bluff drew new attention in response to pro-Iran militia killing three US soldiers at a Jordanian base last month.

There has been no official response from US authorities regarding Iran’s claim to Antarctica.

But the leading US media, Fox News Digital, asked a US State Department spokesman whether Iran’s recent disbursement of US$6 billion held in Qatar could be used by Tehran to build a base in Antarctica. Washington emphasized that this could not be done.

“No. Iranian funds held in Qatar must not be used for any activities in Antarctica,” stressed an unnamed US State Department spokesperson.

“The funds can only be used to purchase humanitarian goods, namely food, medicine, medical equipment and agricultural products,” said the spokesperson.
