Israel Will Invade Rafah, Egypt Reminds This!

Jakarta

The Egyptian government warned that Israel’s planned ground invasion of Rafah in southern Gaza would have a “catastrophic impact” on peace in the Middle East.

In a session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, foreign ministers from Arab League countries said that several countries were turning a blind eye to the suffering in Gaza.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said the extreme polarization that occurred as a result of the Gaza war had exposed the double standards of some members of the UN human rights body.

“The world is witnessing the most heinous crimes and violations against the Palestinian people,” Shoukry said, as reported by the news agency AFPWednesday (28/2/2024).

He called for an immediate ceasefire and urged Israel not to attack Rafah.

“Any military action in a situation like this will have a catastrophic impact that will undermine peace in the region,” he warned.

Previously, the Israeli government had said that a ceasefire with Hamas would delay, not prevent, a ground invasion of Rafah, where some 1.4 million Palestinian civilians have sought refuge from the Gaza war.

The war in Gaza began after the Hamas militant group that controls the Palestinian territory launched an attack on October 7, killing around 1,160 people in Israel, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally.

Hamas also took hostages, of which 130 people are currently still being held hostage in Gaza.
