Katia García, first referee to officiate a Liga MX match in two decades

MEXICO CITY (apro).- Referee Katia Itzel García Mendoza was designated by the Referees Commission to be the main whistler in the Pachuca MX League match against Querétaro on Matchday 11 of Clausura 2024, this Saturday, December 9. March at 7:00 p.m.

The last time a woman was the central judge of a First Division duel in Mexico occurred 20 years ago.

The first to do so was Virginia Tovar, who directed Irapuato’s duel against América on matchday 6 of the 2004 Clausura Tournament, a match that ended 2-1 in favor of the strawberry team. However, Tovar did not whistle again in a match on the top Mexican circuit.

On July 26, 2022, Katia García also wrote her name in the history of national football by being the first central referee in a Liga Expansión match, this for the Club Atlético La Paz match against Celaya, which ended 0 -0.

García debuted as a referee in 2016 in the TDP League (Mexico’s Third Division) and since then she has participated in Basic Forces Tournaments of the MX League (Under-13, U-15, U-17 and U-20), in addition to doing so in the Liga MX Femenil and has been the fourth referee in the Liga Expansión. She has also participated in Tornero Concacaf U-17 and U-20 Qualifiers, as well as in the She Believes Cup. Since 2019 she has obtained the FIFA Badge.
