M 7.0 Earthquake Rocks Kyrgyzstan-Xinjiang Border

An earthquake measuring magnitude (M) 7.0 rocked the Kyrgyzstan-Xinjiang border region. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles).

Reported by Reuters, Tuesday (23/1/2024), the earthquake was reported by the German Geoscience Research Center (GFZ). In nearby Kazakhstan, the emergency ministry reported a similar earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale.

In Kazakhstan’s largest city, Almaty, residents left their homes and gathered outside despite the cold weather. No damage was reported.

The shaking, followed by an aftershock about 30 minutes later, was also felt in Uzbekistan.
