Migrants: Video of the fire at the immigration station must be kept secret: FGR

The Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) of Mexico stated yesterday that a video of the fire at the immigration station in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, which occurred on March 27 and in which 40 migrants died, must be kept secret as they are part of an ongoing criminal investigation.

Given this announcement, the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), said he disagreed with hiding the videos about that fire and promised that there will be justice, when two months have passed since the incident.

“I am not in favor of hiding the information, I don’t know why they did it,” said the president during his morning press conference and recalled that “the investigation is underway” into the events, and that there are already detainees.

In an informative card, the FGR indicated that The request for transparency to make that video public was not requested from that agency, but from the National Institute of Migration (INM)..

“The request, for transparency, about the video of the fire at the National Institute of Migration station, in Ciudad Juárez, was addressed to the INM itself,” he said.

In addition, he pointed out that in the investigation folder “no specific request for transparency regarding said video has been received.” And he added that the investigation, in general terms, “must be kept secret by ministry of law, except that, in this case, said video has been widely disseminated by the media and social networks,” which is why “there is no problem in make it known, due to the legal requirements, before any request that is made in this regard”.

After the tragedy, a dozen people have been detained, while the director of the INM, Francisco Garduño, was linked to the process because the Attorney General of the Republic accuses him of omission of functions due to his role in the events, but he remains in freedom and without resigning his position.

Meanwhile, López Obrador has justified on several occasions that Garduño remains as head of Migration, although he has promised that no one will be protected, in addition to the fact that there will be justice.

In custody for five years

Yesterday, an announcement was made public by the National Institute of Migration, through the general directorate of migration, about the classification of videos related to the fire that occurred in the migrant center in Ciudad Juárez.

The material linked to the accident that occurred on March 27, 2023, they indicated, will be reserved for five years.

The INM argues that this measure is intended to protect the identity and safety of the workers who allegedly locked up the migrants who died in the fire. They consider that the lives of the migrants present in the event would also be put at risk.

Likewise, the INM declared that “the misuse of the required video recordings puts the safety and integrity of those involved at risk due to their control.”

A national circulation outlet recalled that the version of events offered by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador also endangers the safety of migrants. Well, the President accused the migrants themselves of starting the fire.

It should be noted that yesterday morning, the President of the Republic insisted that he was not informed about the INM statement related to the confidentiality of the videos, and stated that he will request a report explaining why the video was saved, and reiterated its commitment to the transparency of information.
