Military coup in Gabon; President under house arrest

New Delhi: The military has announced that it has overthrown President Ali Bongo Ondimba, who is bedridden due to a stroke, and has taken over the administration of the Central African country of Gabon. President Ali Bongo is under house arrest. General Bryce Oligui Nguema was chosen as the new leader.

After hearing the news, people danced in the street. Gabon, an oil producing country, was formerly a French colony. Gabon has been ruled by President Ali Bongo Ondimba’s family for 56 years since 1967. The coup took place on the day President Ali announced his re-election after 14 years in power.

European countries have huge investments in Gabon. Meanwhile, France called for respect for Gabon’s election. Located on the Atlantic coast, Gabon has a protected forest and coastline rich in natural resources.
