Mount Semeru Erupts, Japan Gives Tsunami Warning

Mount Semeru in East Java, erupted and spewed hot clouds. The Japan Meteorological Agency also warned of the threat of a tsunami due to the eruption of Mount Semeru.

Reported Kyodo NewsSunday (4/12/2022), Japan’s weather agency warned that a tsunami could arrive at Miyako and Yaeyama Islands in the southern prefecture of Okinawa at around 14.30 local time.

To note, Semeru erupted at around 02.46 WIB early this morning with a column of ash 1,500 meters high above the mountain peak around 5,176 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with medium to thick intensity to the southeast and south. This eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 35 mm and a duration of 0 seconds.

The ESDM Geological Agency’s PVMBG has now raised the status of Mount Semeru from Alert to Caution. The increase from alert level 3 to level 4 starts this afternoon.

The increase starts at 12.00 WIB. Head of PVMBG Geological Agency Hendra Gunawan advised no activity within a radius of 8 km from the summit of Mount Semeru.

“There is no activity within a radius of 8 km from the summit, and sectoral to the southeast (Besuk Kobokan and Kali Lanang) as far as 19 km from the peak. An official letter to increase the status will be submitted immediately,” said Hendra Gunawan in a written statement.
