New York supermarket shooting leaves 10 dead

As a result of shooting in a supermarket in the city of Buffalo (New York State, USA), ten people were killed, three more were injured.

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown said the attack took place in the afternoon.

According to him, among the dead is a security officer, a former policeman who tried to stop the shooter.

Peyton Gendron, an 18-year-old white man, is reported to have perpetrated the supermarket shooting.

Eyewitnesses report that the shooter was wearing a camouflage uniform and bulletproof vest, he had a helmet on his head.

Authorities say 11 of the 13 people targeted by the shooter were black.

The attacker entered the supermarket with a machine gun and opened fire, the incident was a racist attack, authorities say.

A hate crime investigation has been launched into the attack.

The shooter is believed to have previously stated his motives in a racist statement posted on the video streaming service Twitch. After the attack, the social network Twitch deleted the footage.

Erie County Attorney General John Flynn said the Buffalo supermarket shooter has been charged with murder in the first degree.

The attacker faces life in prison without parole.

He added that the authorities are also exploring the possibility of charging the perpetrator with terrorism.

Payton Gendron has pleaded not guilty to the charges of first-degree murder.

He will appear in court for the second time on May 17 at 9:30 am local time.
