North Korea Fires 2 Ballistic Missiles into the Sea of Japan

Pyongyang

North Korea (North Korea) fired two short-range ballistic missiles. The missile was aimed at the sea.

Reported AFP, Thursday (31/8/2023), the missiles were fired towards the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan, just before midnight, the South Korean military said. The South Korean military is still analyzing the type of missile launched by North Korea.

“While strengthening our monitoring and vigilance against additional provocations, our military maintains an attitude of full preparedness through close cooperation with the United States,” South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said in a text message sent to reporters.

The annual U.S.-South Korean Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises always anger North Korea. North Korea itself has carried out a number of weapons tests this year.

The joint US-South Korean air exercise involved at least one US B-1B strategic bomber flying over the Korean Peninsula early Wednesday, according to Yonhap. US national security spokesman John Kirby declined to comment to reporters in Washington.

On Tuesday, the United States, South Korea and Japan held a trilateral naval missile defense exercise that angered North Korea.

Washington, Seoul and Tokyo have stepped up their defense cooperation in recent months in response to increasing missile provocations by North Korea.

Last week, Pyongyang made its second attempt to put a spy satellite into orbit, although it ended in failure.
