“These numbers are expected to increase as search and rescue teams work tirelessly to find survivors,” OCHA said in its report.

More than 40,000 people have been forced to flee their homes in northeastern Libya since extreme rains caused by Hurricane Daniel.

Experts say the storm’s impact was exacerbated by a variety of other factors. Such as damaged infrastructure to inadequate warning systems.

Derna was split in two after flood waters swept through the area. The city had a population of around 100,000 before the tragedy.

“With thousands of refugees now displaced, the risk of exposure to landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW) from years of conflict is increasing, as flood waters have now displaced landmines and ERW,” OCHA said.

Nearly 300,000 children affected by flooding from Hurricane Daniel face increased risks of cholera, malnutrition, diarrhea and dehydration.
