Who would have thought that the three-hour long film about the inventor of the atomic bomb would become one of the best sellers of the year along with the story of the iconic doll, the plumber and the guardians of the galaxy.
Oppenheimer’s achievement is what makes the director, Christopher Nolan, even more optimistic about the future of cinema. Considering that this film is his most financially successful work among the various genres he has ever acted in.
In his interview with Empire, Nolan also felt happy that the film was not from a popular genre (unlike superhero or science fiction), this biopic had actually succeeded in attracting a lot of audience interest.
“I made a three-hour film about Robert Oppenheimer that was rated R and half of it was black-and-white – and made a billion dollars. Of course I think the films did well… What’s crazy is that it was actually the most successful film ever I’ve ever made. I’ve been doing this for 20 years and in the UK it’s the highest-grossing film. So I feel good about the state of the film business, based on my own experience. But also based on seeing other films out there, seeing audiences coming back for more,” he said.
Other films he referred to include Barbie, which was paired with the same release date as Oppenheimer. This sparked a pop culture phenomenon called Barbenheimer that attracted attention, memes, and audiences everywhere.
While Barbie was expected to come out on top and it did, grossing $1.4 billion worldwide, Nolan and Oppenheimer benefited quite well from the double feature.
But it wasn’t just Barbenheimer who helped Oppenheimer. As Nolan said, the audience’s desire to see fresh material on the big screen is also a factor.
“The audience’s desire to be surprised, to see something new, to see something they didn’t know they wanted, that’s always been the most powerful force in theatrical films…So it’s wonderful to see that this year.”
Oppenheimer ultimately became the highest-grossing biopic of all time, earning $954 million worldwide compared to the previous record holder, Bohemian Rhapsody, which earned $879 million.
According to The Numbers, in 2023 the American domestic box office will generate $8.5 billion. This number is a large increase compared to last year which reached $7.4 billion and was the best year since the Covid-19 pandemic.
Before Covid, in 2019, they generated up to $11.2 billion domestically. And most of those numbers were contributed from Marvel, Disney, and also the Joker film.
