Pakistan: Election Commission prosecuted Imran Khan and his aide Fawad Chaudhary

Islamabad. Pakistan’s top election body on Wednesday prosecuted jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his aide and former Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry in contempt cases. Khan, 71, is the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) while Chaudhary is a former senior member of his party.

A case was registered against both the leaders for making false statements to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja in 2022. The four-member ECP committee heard the case at the high-security Adiala prison in Rawalpindi, where Khan and Chaudhary are lodged in separate cases. Both the leaders were prosecuted for insulting the election body and the Chief Election Commissioner.

Khan and Choudhary were present in the court when the charges against them were read out. However, both of them denied the allegations made against them in the charge sheet. After the prosecution, the election hearing committee adjourned the next hearing of the contempt case till January 16.

Both the leaders have been prosecuted after the hearing of the case was postponed several times. Earlier, the hearing of the case was to be held in the ECP building but the police refused to produce Khan due to security reasons, after which the Commission had to hold the hearing in Adiala Jail from December 6. Khan was ousted from power in April 2022 through a no-confidence vote. More than 150 cases have been registered against Khan since he was ousted from power.
