Palestinians bury journalist Abu Akleh in East Jerusalem

Thousands of Palestinians on Friday participated in the funeral ceremony for veteran Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in occupied East Jerusalem.

The funeral service started from St Louis French Hospital in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood and reached the Cathedral Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin where the funeral service was held.

Meanwhile, Israeli police raided a cemetery in a French hospital and prevented Palestinians from holding Palestinian posters or flags during the ceremony.

Israeli police used stun grenades, tear gas and batons when attacking Palestinians, leaving dozens injured, according to a statement by the Palestinian Red Crescent Society.

Eyewitnesses reported that Abu Akleh’s coffin nearly fell to the ground due to the Israeli attack on the Palestinians who were carrying the Al Jazeera journalist.

Foreign diplomats, including from Qatar and the United States (US), joined the funeral procession for the slain journalist.

Abu Akleh is buried next to his parents in the Mount Zion Protestant Cemetery in Jerusalem’s Old City.

The veteran journalist was covering an Israeli military raid near the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank when he was shot dead on Wednesday.

Palestinian officials and the Doha-based Al Jazeera news network said Abu Akleh was targeted by Israeli forces.
