Palestinians bury Shireen Abu Akleh in East Jerusalem, amid aggression by Israeli forces

Thousands of people participated this Friday, May 13, in the funeral ceremony of the murdered Shireen Abu Akleh, a veteran journalist for Al Jazeera, in occupied East Jerusalem.

The funeral procession departed from the French Hospital St. Louis in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, to the Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Virgin, where the burial took place.

Israeli police attacked the funeral procession at the French hospital and prevented Palestinians from holding Palestinian banners or banners at the ceremony.

Israeli security forces used stun grenades, tear gas and batons to attack Palestinians, injuring dozens of them, according to a statement from the Palestinian Red Crescent Society.

Eyewitnesses reported that Abu Akleh’s coffin nearly fell to the ground due to the Israeli attack on the Palestinians carrying it.

Several foreign diplomats, including those from Qatar and the United States, joined the funeral procession of the murdered journalist.

Abu Akleh was buried alongside her parents in the Mount Zion Protestant Cemetery in the Old City of Jerusalem.

The veteran journalist was covering an Israeli military raid on Wednesday near the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank when she was shot dead. Palestinian officials and the Doha-based Al Jazeera outlet said she was deliberately targeted by Israeli forces.

Abu Akleh was born in Jerusalem in 1971 and for the last two and a half decades, she was one of Al Jazeera’s most prominent journalists covering the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories.
