Protests at the CCH Azcapotzalco: What happened and what has the UNAM said?

Students from the Azcapotzalco College of Sciences and Humanities (CCH) have protested in recent weeks over cases of insecurity and harassment there. This has led to demonstrations and vandalization of the facilities.

What happened at CCH Azcapotzalco on Friday?

On October 20, students held a rally in the central esplanade of the campus during the morning. In the assembly it was decided that there would be a student strike, but this was unknown by the educational authorities.

The address of CCH Azcapotzalco has indicated in a statement that, at approximately 2:30 p.m., “a group of hooded men armed with sticks and Molotov cocktails prostrated themselves in different parts of the Campus facilities and carried out acts of vandalism, causing destruction and the burning of the management building”.

It was also indicated that some of the Administration staff were physically attacked and were prevented from leaving the school. This resulted in three people being injured.

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) issued a statement in which it stated that the hooded group carried out attacks, for which criminal complaints will be filed against those responsible.

The Technical Council of that team pointed out this Saturday that The group of people sprayed gasoline and set fire to teachers who were guarding the administration building.

“As a result of this malicious action, two teachers are hospitalized for second-degree burns and others were treated in an emergency by paramedics outside the campus.”

Why are the students of CCH Azcapotzalco protesting?

Students from this campus, located in El Rosario, have denounced on several occasions the unsafety within the campus.

On October 17, the School management published a document with the students’ requests and demands, responding to the community’s concerns.

One of the most recent events was just on October 11, when A person entered the campus with a weapon and threatened local students. The school management reported that it is already carrying out investigations into this individual and that a complaint has already been made to the CDMX Prosecutor’s Office.

It was also reported that the request of the dismissal of secretary Patricia Trejowho has been accused of harassment and intimidation towards students.

Among other things, students ask stop bullying of business students; the evaluation of teachers who teach classes and have fallen into dynamics of abuse of power and negligence; the inspection and fumigation on campus due to a rat infestation.

Likewise, they have requested the creation of a community kitchen that can offer food scholarships for students in vulnerable situations.

And it is requested that the management ensure maintenance and cleaning in sanitaryas well as the installation of panic buttons in bathrooms and the implementation of inclusive neutral bathrooms.

The document with the requests contains 18 points that are being reviewed by management.
