Jakarta

Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit China this week at the invitation of leader Xi Jinping.

Reported by the news agency AFP, Tuesday (14/5/2024), spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hua Chunying, said that Putin would be in Beijing, the capital of China from next Thursday to Friday. This will be the Russian leader’s second visit to China in just six months.

It will be the Russian leader’s first trip abroad since being re-elected in March, and his second in six months to China.

According to observers, Russia has become increasingly dependent on China as an important economic support since Western countries imposed unprecedented sanctions over its military attack on Ukraine.

Beijing has rejected criticism of its ties with Moscow, praising the “borderless” partnership as it enjoys cheap Russian energy imports and access to abundant natural resources, including steady gas deliveries via the Power of Siberia pipeline.

But as the economic partnership comes under intense scrutiny in Western countries, Chinese banks, fearful of U.S. sanctions that might sever their ties to the global financial system, have begun to have an adverse impact on Russian businesses.
