Putin, Trump and why Europe talks about defense

Against a backdrop of severe arms shortages in Ukraine and growing doubts about future US support, Europe is rushing to avoid the defense “blame game” while wondering how to increase arms production.

As Ukraine enters the third year of war with Russia and questions loom over what commitment Washington will have with the European members of NATO, politicians, diplomats and experts agree that Europe must make a greater effort in defense. The tense issue was on the agenda of this Monday’s meeting of around twenty European leaders in Paris, where they agreed to move towards “a war economy.” The French president, Emmanuel Macron, did not even exclude the sending of troops if necessary to achieve that objective, words that have raised blisters among European allies, who have rejected this possibility.
