Return of United Nations Assistance Mission in Sudan, full cooperation of officials expected

United Nations. The United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan completed its withdrawal from Sudan on Thursday local time. A UN spokesperson in Sudan said that the mission run by the UN to provide assistance in the ongoing conflict in the country has been completed. Stephane Dujarric, chief spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said in a statement on Thursday that the UN Integrated Transition Assistance Mission (UNITAMS) in Sudan has been completed.

He said Guterres commended all international and national UNITAM personnel for their dedication and service to the people of Sudan during the mission. The spokesperson said the Secretary-General expects the full cooperation of the Sudanese authorities to complete the mission’s liquidation process on March 1 as smoothly and expeditiously as possible. He said the ongoing conflict in Sudan is further weakening the rule of law and the security of civilians, and putting the entire country and the region at risk. Guterres called on the conflicting parties to lay down their arms and commit to broad-based peace talks that could lead to the resumption of a civilian-led democratic transition.

Ramatane Lamamra, the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Sudan, has begun his work in support of mediation efforts. Continued international support is extremely important in this regard. Guterres called on the Sudanese authorities to continue their cooperation to provide this much-needed assistance, the spokesman said. The UN Security Council adopted a resolution on December 1, 2023, to terminate UNITAM’s mandate at the request of the Sudanese authorities. It is noteworthy that relations between UNITAM and Sudan have become tense since the outbreak of war between the Sudanese armed forces and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces.
