Same-sex marriage approved in Greece |

ATHENS: The Greek parliament has approved a law allowing same-sex marriage. In the 300-member parliament, 176 voted in favor and 76 voted against. Two people abstained from voting and 46 people were not present in the assembly. The proposed law would also allow same-sex ‘couples’ to adopt children.

Greece is the 35th country in the world and the 16th in the European Union to legalize same-sex marriage. A two-day debate was held in Parliament and an opinion survey was conducted among the public.

A majority of the survey favored same-sex marriage. Meanwhile, the Orthodox Church organized protest events.
