Separatists of South Ossetia will hold a “referendum” for unification with the Russian Federation

South Ossetia will hold a referendum on the unification of the region and Russia.

This was stated by the head of the separatist formation Anatoly Bibilov.

The so-called vote is scheduled for July 17th.

It follows from Bibilov’s “decree” that the ballot will contain only one question: “Do you support the unification of the Republic of South Ossetia and Russia?”

Earlier in March, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Moscow would “respect” the results of the referendum in South Ossetia on unification with Russia.

The issue of South Ossetia and Abkhazia

In 1992-1993, there was an armed conflict between Georgia and Russian-backed separatists.

As a result, Abkhazia and South Ossetia unilaterally declared their independence from Georgia.

In 2008, Moscow recognized the so-called independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Following this, Georgia severed diplomatic relations with the Russian Federation. Switzerland has assumed the role of a mediator in relations between Tbilisi and Moscow.
