Jakarta –
There are not many writer and reader gathering festivals as well as literary events that have been held until now. The Salihara Community has LIFE’s, the Jakarta Arts Council has held the Jakarta International Literary Festival (JILF), Ubud has the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival, Makassar has held the Makassar International Writers Festival, and various other cities.
In the third event, the publisher Gramedia Pustaka Utama (GPU) again held the Ruang Tengah event, which has now been renamed the Indonesian Literacy Festival. The celebration of meeting writers and readers that will be held this weekend will be enlivened by 50 writers, musicians, and literacy activists. So how is it different from other festivals?
“This festival is a celebration for anyone who wants to develop the world of literacy. Literacy is about developing fiction, non-fiction, cooking books, and the point is to invite more and more people to join this movement,” said the Chief Editor of Gramedia Pustaka Utama (GPU). ), Andi Tarigan at a press conference in the West Palmerah area, West Jakarta on Tuesday (29/8/2023).
When talking about the gathering of readers and writers, he continued, I hope it will be a literacy party for all book lovers in Indonesia.
“Oh, this is a literacy party in Indonesia, they (readers) are part of this party,” he said again.
One of the other differentiating things, said Andi, is the starting point of the aim of this festival is books and a culture of reading.
“We have many different perspectives, there is also a literacy concert which will be held for 3 consecutive days. Having lots of seminars and perspectives are people who like to read books, people who see books. We hope that this circle will get bigger, not just bookworms, ” he insisted.
The same thing was also expressed by Eka Kurniawan. Novelist O emphasized that literacy events in Indonesia are more lively than other countries in Asia.
“In European countries, most of the visitors are people who like books but are elderly and are held on weekends like retirees. Young people are almost rare. In Malaysia, they just follow the example to Indonesia, even though our conditions are dire, they are still a role models,” he said.
