The head of the Pentagon called on Shoigu for an early ceasefire in Ukraine

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, for the first time since the beginning of the Russian war against Ukraine, had a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu. This was announced on Friday by Pentagon spokesman John Kirby.

According to the report, during the talks, Austin “called for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine and emphasized the importance of maintaining channels of communication.”

Kirby gave no other details of the conversation.

The last time Lloyd Austin and Sergei Shoigu spoke was on February 18.

On the night of February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the start of a special military operation in the Ukrainian Donbas. Following this, the Russian army attacked Ukraine.

Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, were subjected to missile and bomb attacks.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky responded by saying that martial law is being introduced throughout the country.

The Ukrainian leader also announced a break in diplomatic relations with Russia.

The Kremlin’s actions were condemned at the UN and in most capitals of the world.

Tough sanctions have been imposed on Russia.
