Tunisian authorities announced on Tuesday the arrest of 58 irregular migrants as they attempted to cross Europe’s shores illegally.
This is what emerges from a press release published by the spokesman of the General Directorate of the National Guard, Houssem Eddine Jebabli.
“The guards of the Amra zone in the governorate (south) of Sfax managed to arrest 12 people of African nationalities (unspecified) as they tried to reach the European sides,” he said.
And the official added: ”National Guard units were also able to intercept 16 people of African nationalities”.
According to Jebabli, ”30 irregular migrants were arrested at the land borders in the governorate of Kasserine (center-west) at the time of their illicit crossing through the Algerian borders”.
Recently, Tunisia has experienced a remarkable increase in irregular migration flows to Europe, particularly to the Italian coasts, in light of the repercussions of the economic and political crises in the country and in various countries in the region.
In an almost daily cadence, the Tunisian authorities thwart attempts at illegal immigration to European shores and arrest hundreds of people.
