Turkey monitors kidnapping of Turkish nationals in Haiti

The Turkish Embassy in the Dominican Republic, which is accredited to Haiti, continues to monitor the hijacking of a passenger bus in Haiti including at least eight Turkish nationals, diplomatic sources said Monday.

Eight Turks traveling on a passenger bus in Haiti were abducted on Sunday, said the source, who asked not to be named

After Monday’s Cabinet meeting, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told reporters that a special group had been formed to organize the rescue of abducted Turkish citizens.

“We are monitoring the situation. A crisis table has been set up in Haiti,” he said.

Saying he had spoken to the Turkish envoy in the Dominican Republic as well as Haiti’s foreign and interior ministers, Cavusoglu noted that ransom was being considered as the reason that motivated the kidnappings.
