UK Summons Russian Diplomat over Alexei Navalny’s Death

British Foreign Minister David Cameron said Russian President Vladimir Putin was “responsible” for the death of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny. London authorities also summoned Russian diplomats in their region to hold Moscow responsible for the death of the opposition figure.

As reported AFPSaturday (17/2/2024), Cameron in a statement via social media X said that Putin “must be responsible for what has happened” following Navalny’s death on Friday (16/2) local time.

“Russia under Putin’s leadership fabricated charges against him (Navalny-ed), poisoned him and sent him to an Arctic penal colony and now he has died tragically,” Cameron wrote in his statement.

“No one should doubt the terrible nature of his (Putin-ed) regime,” he added.

The British Foreign Office summoned Russian diplomats from its Embassy in London on Friday evening “to make clear that we hold the Russian authorities fully responsible” for Navalny’s death.

“Alexei Navalny dedicated his life to exposing corruption in the Russian system, calling for free and open politics, holding the Kremlin to account,” a British Foreign Office spokesman said in a statement.

Russian officials said that Navalny, 47, died on Friday (16/2) local time in an Arctic prison, about a month before elections that will extend Putin’s rule are held.
