UN calls for independent investigation into killing of Al Jazeera reporter

UN human rights experts on Friday condemned the killing of Qatari Al Jazeera journalist Shirin Abu Akil in the occupied West Bank and called for a swift, transparent, thorough and independent investigation into her death.

“We demand a prompt, independent, impartial, effective, thorough and transparent investigation into the killing of Shirin Abu Akile,” they said in a statement.

Stressed that the investigation should be carried out in accordance with the Principles for the Effective Prevention and Investigation of Extra-legal, Arbitrary and Summary Executions

According to experts, Abu Akile and other journalists who were present in the area of ​​the incident were wearing special equipment that clearly indicated that they were media workers.

The UN called on the Israeli and Palestinian authorities and other stakeholders to cooperate with the investigation.

The staff of the World Organization said that the murder of a reporter is another manifestation of the high level of violence against media workers in the region, primarily Palestinian ones.

More than 40 Palestinian journalists have been killed since 2000, and hundreds have been injured or victims of violence.

“The assassination of Abu Akile is another major attack on media freedom and freedom of expression amid escalating violence in the occupied West Bank,” UN experts said in a statement.

Al-Jazeera TV journalist Shirin Abu Akile was killed by Israeli forces on May 11 near a refugee camp in the city of Jenin in the occupied West Bank.

According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, a 51-year-old employee of the Qatari TV channel died from a gunshot wound to the head.

Palestinian journalist Ali al-Sumudi, who was next to Shirin Abu Akile, was also wounded, his health condition is stable.

Footage circulated on social media showed the woman was wearing a bulletproof vest.

Meanwhile, the command of the Israel Army (IDF) announced the beginning of an investigation into the incident.

The IDF said that “the military carried out an operation to capture terrorists in Jenin.”

The report states that at the time of Akile’s death, “dozens of armed Palestinians fired on the Israeli military.”

The IDF did not rule out that “journalists could have come under fire from armed Palestinians.”
