Upset by Biden’s Impeachment Attempt, Trump Takes Revenge?

Washington DC

There is the name of former President of the United States (US) Donald Trump behind the impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden which was just ordered by the Speaker of the US House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy. Such an effort would be a step that Trump and his supporters in the US Congress have long sought.

Looking back, as reported AFPWednesday (13/9/2023), Trump was impeached by the US Congress at the end of 2019 on charges of blackmailing Ukraine in a failed attempt to obtain dirty information about Biden, who was then his main competitor in the 2020 presidential election.

Four years later, the Republicans who dominate the US House of Representatives are trying to impeach Biden, claiming they have dirty information that Trump sought several years ago, namely that during his time as US Vice President, Biden personally benefited from the business affairs of his son, Hunter.

McCarthy as Speaker of the US House of Representatives, on Tuesday (12/9), announced that he had ordered an impeachment investigation against Biden.

In contrast to that announcement, Biden’s Democratic Party — and even some Republicans — stated that Chairman of the US House of Representatives Oversight Committee James Comer, one of the Republicans leading the investigation, did not yet have evidence of Biden’s alleged violations.

Comer alleged that the “Biden family” — without explicitly naming Biden — and their “associates” had received payments of more than $20 million from several foreign entities.

Although Hunter also had business ties with China, Kazakhstan, Romania and several other countries, McCarthy’s announcement of Biden’s impeachment inquiry focused on Biden’s son’s ties to a Ukrainian energy company called Burisma.

Hunter was said to have been given a lucrative position on Burisma’s board of directors in early 2014, when his father served as US Vice President under President Barack Obama. At that time, Biden was tasked with overseeing US policy towards Ukraine.
