War in Ukraine: Turkey and the UN act together to end the crisis

Turkish Presidency Spokesperson Ibrahim Kalin and UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths on Monday discussed a plan to establish a humanitarian contact group on Ukraine and the ongoing crisis in the country.

The meeting between senior Turkish and UN officials was held in the Turkish capital, Ankara.

Ibrahim Kalin and Martin Griffiths discussed the current situation in Ukraine and humanitarian assistance to the population.

The plan to create a humanitarian contact group on Ukraine, which will include representatives from Russia, Ukraine, the United Nations and Turkey, was discussed in depth during the exchanges.

Ibrahim Kalin notably underlined the importance of Turkish diplomacy in opening humanitarian corridors in the war zones in Ukraine as well as the evacuation of civilians.

He stressed the need to reach a ceasefire and advance peace talks in order to end the current humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, and expressed his satisfaction with the evacuations in the city of Mariupol.

The two officials agreed to maintain close coordination and cooperation in preventing humanitarian crises.
