White House Unveils Agreements to Lower Internet Costs for Millions of Americans

The administration of the president of the United States, Joe Biden, revealed this Monday, May 9, new agreements to reduce the costs of the Internet for millions of Americans, the White House announced.

“High-speed Internet service is no longer a luxury, it’s a necessity. But too many families go without high-speed Internet because of the cost or have to cut back on other essentials to make their monthly service payments,” the White House said in a statement.

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Act aims to create the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), which will reduce Internet service costs for millions of people by up to $30 per month, or $75 per month on tribal lands.

The administration assured that 20 leading Internet providers in the country, such as AT&T, Comcast and Verizon, which cover more than 80% of the US population in urban, suburban and rural areas, have committed to increase speeds or reduce costs. prices, and offer all ACP-eligible plans for no more than $30 per month.

Eligible households will be able to register and get details about ACP and find participating Internet providers in their respective areas on the “” website.

Households will qualify for the program based on their income or participation in federal programs such as Medicaid. The US Social Security Administration will send an email to the 1.6 million beneficiaries to inform them of their eligibility.

Additionally, some states will send text messages to millions of eligible households, and public agencies will do direct enrollment and outreach.

About 48 million households, or almost 40% of the total, are estimated to qualify for the ACP because their income is below 200% of the federal poverty level, according to the release.

“So far, more than 1,300 internet service providers participate in the program and more than 11.5 million households have registered to receive the ACP benefit,” the White House added.

In November 2021, Biden signed into law the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which includes the investment of USD 65 billion to provide affordable and high-speed Internet access to the population.
