Young people between 14 and 24 years old lead the reading index in Spain

The percentage of the population over 14 years of age that read books during 2023 reached 68.3% and one in four went to a library, according to data from the Barometer of Reading and Book Purchasing Habits in Spain 2023.

According to this study, young people continue to be the sector of the Spanish population that reads the most in their free time. The rate of readers between 14 and 24 years old reaches 74%. While in the 25 to 65 age group, the percentage is 65.8% and 53.7% in the group over 65 years old. On the other hand, 35.9% of those surveyed say they never or almost never read. The global percentage of those who read in their free time stands at 64.1%. Since 2012 this number has grown five points.

The Barometer data show relevant differences if aspects such as gender, educational level or territory are analyzed. Women read more than men in their free time. The percentage of women exceeds that of men in all age groups and the greatest distance appears in the range between 25 and 34 years old, where 73.4% of women read compared to 55.9% of men. . In total terms, 68.6% of women read in their free time and 59.3% of men do so.

Regarding educational level, 86.1% of those with university education read in their free time. This figure decreases to 61.6% among those who have secondary education, and the percentage of those who have completed primary education drops to 38.1%.

By autonomous communities, six of them are above the Spanish average (64.1%): Madrid (73.5%), Catalonia (68.2%), Navarra (68.1%), Basque Country (67 .8%), La Rioja (66.6%) and Aragón (64.3%). And below are Murcia (59.5%), Andalusia (59%), Castilla-La Mancha (58.9%), the Canary Islands (58.3%) and Extremadura (54.4%). In territories with large urban concentrations there are better reading rates than where a rural and elderly population predominates.

Finally, four out of ten Spaniards do not have a reading habit and explain that the reason is the lack of free time (44.3%). 31.1% indicate that they prefer to dedicate their free time to other things and 29.7% have no interest in reading.
